GTA 6 Development: Project Americas & 8-Year Journey
Read our complete GTA 6 hub: release date, price, map, characters & everything we know.
Rockstar Games has broken its silence. In a rare behind-the-scenes feature published by Bloomberg Businessweek on October 14, 2026, reporter Jason Schreier spent a day at Rockstar North in Edinburgh interviewing the studio's senior leadership about GTA 6's eight-year road to its November 19 launch.
It's the first time Rockstar has talked openly about the struggles behind its biggest game. Here are the biggest reveals — from the scrapped "Project Americas" to a dedicated NPC studio and a sweat simulation system.
GTA 6 Started as "Project Americas"
Development began in 2015 when Rockstar creative lead Rob Nelson and senior staff took a research trip to Miami. The project was codenamed Project Americas because the original plan spanned large portions of North and South America — before being scaled back to Miami and its surroundings, the area that became Vice City and Leonida. The final map, described as roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, is the focused version of a much bigger idea.
Red Dead Redemption 2, the Pandemic, and Two Delays
Schreier's reporting confirms the long timeline: Red Dead Redemption 2's growing ambition pulled most of Rockstar's staff away, and full focus didn't return to GTA 6 until around 2019 — when the Bonnie-and-Clyde story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos solidified. Then came the pandemic, a major leak, and two delays: from 2025 to May 26, 2026, then to November 19, 2026. One development lead described a period of the project as a "dark period."
Rockstar also addressed the money question: the studio gave no budget figure but shot down rumors of a $1.5 billion-plus price tag. And there's a promise for the future — leadership says the next game won't take eight years, though nothing has been announced.
A Los Angeles Studio Just for NPCs — and a Sweat System
Two of the stranger reveals show Rockstar's obsession with density. When NPC projections came back, Nelson said they were "horrifying" — so Rockstar opened a new Los Angeles studio dedicated solely to creating NPCs to make the world feel populated.
And yes, there's a sweat system: characters like Lucia and Jason perspire based on physical effort, so dancing in a nightclub leaves them sweatier than standing still. It's a small detail that hints at the simulation depth Rockstar is chasing.
What Rockstar Didn't Say
The feature doesn't touch the PC version (still unannounced), GTA Online's 2027 plans, or review embargoes. But as the clearest picture yet of more than eight years of work — and the longest Rockstar has ever spoken on the record about a game in development — it's essential reading ahead of November 19.
What was GTA 6's codename?
Project Americas — the original concept covered large parts of North and South America before being scaled back to Miami and Leonida.
Why did GTA 6 take eight years?
Red Dead Redemption 2 pulled staff away until ~2019, then the pandemic, a major leak, and two delays (2025 → May 2026 → November 2026) extended the timeline.
Did Rockstar confirm the $1.5 billion GTA 6 budget rumor?
No — the studio gave no figure but denied the $1.5 billion-plus rumor.
When does GTA 6 launch?
November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC version announced.
